Day 1: FES – IFRANE – CEDAR FOREST – MIDELT – ERFOUD – SAHARA DESERT
Starting our Fes to Marrakech 3 day desert tour. After breakfast in yout riad we leave for the Middle Atlas Mountains to Ifrane; a fresh, green and leafy Alpine style village, built by the French elite to their European taste. Continuing on just a few km we will find ourselves in the legendary forest of Cedars Azrou. Where the birdsong creates a musical backdrop to the unfailing. attentive and curious gaze of the Barbary monkeys that live in the forest.
The National Park of Ifrane is the largest of Morocco. And we will be able to contemplate the incredible trees. Gouraud Atlas cedars more than 100 years old, grand. Majestic and imposing oaks, famous in the Atlas for their imposing antiquity and which darken the road creating a mysterious atmosphere.
We continue towards Midelt, the Middle Atlas unfolds and offers truly spectacular landscapes with their nomadic villages scattered all along the way.After stopping in Midelt for lunch, our route crosses the Tizi n’Talghom pass at an altitude of 1907 metres. passing through the Ziz Valley; a magical place where natural life is in it’s pure expression due to the palm trees, the people and their way of life and along the way we will see a multitude of kasbahs that are present day ruins but still preserved in more or less good condition.
Just before reaching the town of Errachidia. We make a stop to take a look at the Hassan Adakhil Dam or as the locals call it, Errachidia Barrage Hassan Ad-Dakhil. We can clearly see its entire length and the contrast of turquoise blue waters with the ochre coloured mountains surrounding them which make for a beautiful panoramic view.
When we arrive at the Palm Grove of Aoufous: declared a Natural Reserve, we will make a stop to admire the palms and orchards that stand among the kasbahs, the small typical housing in the area and the palm groves will accompany us during the trip to Erfoud until we take the road to reach the hotel which is located at the foot of the dunes. Here we begin to feel the peace and tranquillity of the desert; there will be camels waiting for us to delve into the desert, watch the spectacular sunset and as night falls, the sky becomes a fascinating blanket of stars.
DAY 2: MERZOUGA – RISSANI – TODRA GORGE – DADES VALLEY
Good morning! Today we get up early to be able to admire the appearance of the sun. Under the spectacular light of dawn the desert sand takes on a reddish colour, slowly becoming more yellow. Back with our camels to have a shower, breakfast and continue our route to Rissani; very famous for its market, this dignified city prides itself on being the last commercial stage before the desert.
The atmosphere that we soak up whilst strolling through the souks of Rissani is not found in any other place of Morocco; at twilight the roofs filter the last rays of the sun in an explosion of colours to fill the senses and even rival the aromas of the classic combination of souk spices. Our path brings us to Erfoud. Where there are major fossil fields and its important market. Next to the central square is the nerve centre of the population. Along the way we also make a brief stop to see the “Khatarat” (system of irrigation canals).
We stop for lunch in Tinejdad before continuing towards the Todra Gorge. This great canyon of red vertical walls formed by limestone rock is a stone paradise holding a river of crystalline waters. The last 600 meters of the gorge are the most spectacular where the canyon narrows to about 10 metres wide and 300 metres and this picturesque environment, dotted with kasbahs and full of palm trees, makes it an obligatory stop and one of the most beautiful landscapes of Morocco. Dinner and accommodation at a hotel.
DAY 3: DADES GORGE – ROSES VALLEY – OUARZAZATE – AIT BENHADDOU – HIGHT ATLAS – MARRAKECH
After a good moroccan breakfast we will head in the direction of Ouarzazate.Passing through Boumalne Dades, we reach The Valley of Roses, situated at the foot of the High Atlas. As its name indicates, this is the area of a most important national crop and is certainly interesting from the point view of tourism. 30 km of uninterrupted of roses and a splendid greenery nestled at the foot of a ochre coloured canyon offers a spectacle of beauty which forms part of the most important landscapes of Morocco.
The valley of Skoura is home to 1000 kasbahs, monuments of Berber art decorated with great taste. Castles of adobe at the foot of the Atlas. A palm grove that hides an oasis of hundreds of architectural gems and that almost breathes life. This is a part of our journey where you can enjoy spectacular views… Its starting point begins in the city of Ouarzazate, where on arrival we will stop to visit the Kasbah of Taourirt; considered one of the best preserved kasbahs in Morocco offering superb panoramic views. before continuing on towards Ait Benhaddou where we stop for lunch.
This is one of the best preserved Ksours and which enjoys the status of being a UNESCO World Heritage site; The highly ornate adobe houses are encompassed. Within a strong defensive wall and reinforced by turrets. this spectacular kasbah. Built with mud and stones is miraculously still standing. At the time that it was inhabited. It stood high on a hill and surrounded by the desert landscape of the Anti Atlas. Without any doubt one of the most magical places in Morocco.
We then continue over the Atlas crossing the pass of Tizi n’Tichka which is 2260 meters in altitude. This is a great mountain range filled with extraordinary landscapes. That we as we cross we cannot help but admire the Berber territory with it’s typical small villages, fortresses…Etc. We arrive at Marrakech in the afternoon.
